The route was chosen for the geological, natural, historic importance and hiking possibilities of this area, belonging to the 5th System of the World Heritage Dolomites. Lying on the geographical border between Veneto and Trentino-Alto Adige, it was the site of the Italo-Austrian Front where some of the harshest fighting with land mines took place during the First World War.
The Lagazuoi is part of the Fanes Range that straddles the two Regions.
The landscape that can be admired on all sides from the highest point of the itinerary, at the peak of the Piccolo Lagazuoi, is one of the most impressive and complete in the whole area of the Dolomites.
The Lagazuoi, the name of which recalls the harsh warfare of a century ago and occurs frequently in modern climbing guides, is an important orographic node, lying between the Valley of Ampezzo and Val Badia and, in the Park of the Ampezzo Dolomites, it forms the watershed between the valleys of Travenanzes and Falzarego – Costeana.
